Octavia Butler's , Kindred , centers upon the most controversial issues in society. The novel conveys the horrid conditions of black slaves and fervently denounces the domestic violence and cruelty imposed upon the black division of the American society. Butler allows one to connect with Dana, the main character of the story plot, and view the period of time from a new perspective. She discusses the barbarities and hatred exercised on African Americans based upon the ethnic and racial discrimination which prevailed in that time period. Often times, the lifestyles of modern African Americans are compared and contrasted with the lifestyles of African American slaves as Dana travels between the two time periods. The theme of resistance is portrayed in the novel as Dana struggles to accept and understand her role in a society in which she does not have any of the rights or freedoms that she has been accustomed to.
