This is a Study Island Question The line between science and fiction is one that many authors have crossed, re-crossed, and drawn over again and again. In some ways one has helped to influence the other and vice versa. Director Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey is one example.
The movie was very accurate in terms of science as it used many different ideas from scientists and engineers. The movie showed space travel in the year 2001.
Since then, the line between science and fiction has continued to thin. The television show Star Trek, which started in 1966, would take these same scientific ideas into a place where "no man has gone before." The show was timely, especially since the U. S. was desperately trying to catch up to the Soviet Union in space travel. In fact, just before the show debuted, the U. S. launched spacecraft Mariner 4. The Soviets also launched their own spacecraft, Venera 3, and both vessels were sent out in the hopes of taking picture of life on other planets.
Years and numerous space explorations later, people's imaginations and their fascination for aliens were further tested with Stephen Spielberg's E. T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. The alien in E. T. looked nonhuman, but in fact, his design came from something very human. Spielberg pasted a picture of Albert Einstein's eyes on a picture of a newborn baby. He made the alien look short and lumpy, but ultimately, there was something endearing about E. T., and audiences flocked to it, showing that the interest in space as well as the possibilities that space presented was as strong as ever.

Which of the following paragraphs best summarizes this article?

W. E. T. was designed to look strange. Director Steven Spielberg had pasted Albert Einstein's eyes and forehead on a picture of a newborn baby to get E. T.'s face, and made him short and sweaty and lumpy.

X. Popular science fiction like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek, Star Wars, and E. T. captured the imagination of the public and helped to fuel a desire to explore space and the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

Y. In 1965, the US spacecraft Mariner 4 traveled past Mars and the Soviet craft Venera 3 went to Venus, snapping pictures people hoped would answer the question: Is there life on other planets?

Z. The $10.5 million MGM movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey, was one example of a sci-fi film that was wildly popular. Director Stanley Kubrick and science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke presented lunar travel as routine. The film was accurate scientifically, incorporating many ideas from scientists and engineers.
