1. Although Zeus was the king of the gods, his temple was plain.
2. Because the temple was relatively simple, the Greeks decided to build a magnificent statue in honor of the god.

4. The statue seemed even more imposing because it reached nearly to the lofty ceiling of the temple.
5. Although copies of the statue were made, none survive.

7. The statue survived until a fire destroyed it in AD 462.
