horses had been the fastest and strongest in Boston. I was going to miss
them. I was pretty sure the firefighters were already missing them. It's not
easy to watch the world change under your feet.
When my father cranked the engine, it was loud enough to break the spell.
The guys grinned and clapped, and Dad said, "Time stops for no one. Neither
does progress."
Everyone nodded. My father commanded respect; he had been at Station 3
for twenty years, and his courage was practically legendary. Maybe that was
why Henry and Lou, the dispatchers, let me hang around so much. Or maybe
