Your task in this final unit is to bring all of your work together into a miniature version of a newscast or a newspaper. You’ve been asked to write three stories—a news story, a feature story, and an opinion piece—and to create one PSA. You’ll take these stories and create the final product based on the guidelines below. If you are creating a newscast, you will need to have two packages (complete stories that are played during the newscast), one live shot, anchors who introduce the packages and banter with the live shot reporter, and your ad. You will need to submit the script for your newscast—the story lengths must coincide with the requirements below—as well as a video of your newscast. You will need to make your newscast as realistic as possible. Enlisting family and friends to be your cast is fine. You may need to use video editing software. If you choose this option, you should have access to this and should be able to submit a video that can be viewed by your instructor. You’ll want to check with your instructor for details on how best to do this. If you are creating a newspaper, your final layout should include a flag with the title of your newspaper, a news story of at least 150 words, a feature story of at least 300 words, an opinion piece of at least 200 words, and a half page PSA. Two of your three stories (the news and the feature) should have a visual of some sort. Your PSA should also have art. Every story should include a headline and captions/cutline for the images. You also must carefully construct your layout; you will be graded on the visual personality and effectiveness of your newspaper. You will be given two grades: one for the stories and PSA themselves, based on your script or the writing, and the second for your ability to construct a visual “publication” that matches the qualities we have discussed in this course.
