Bats belong to a group of animals called Chiroptera (Kir-op-tera), which means
"hand wing." They are the only mammals capable of true flight as their forelimbs
have adapted as wings. Other mammals like the flying squirrel glide rather than fly.
Bats are often seen swooping through the sky at dawn and dusk. Bats live all over
the world in caves and trees, under bridges, and in mines and other structures.
More than 50 unique species of bats live in national parks. Trees, caves, mines, talus
slopes, and rock crevices provide important shelter for bats to rest (or roost), safe
from predators. Most bats are frugivores (fruit eaters) and many are insectivores
(insect eaters). Bats are small, have a high metabolism, and rapidly burn energy
when flying. Therefore, they must consume a lot of food for their size. Some bats
may eat over twice their weight in insects or fruit. Bats use a lot of energy flying
around and must consume a lot of food, such as insects, to fuel their daily activities.
When cold weather drives insects away, bats must choose to hunker down and
hibernate or migrate to warmer areas with a more abundant food supply. Some bat
species hibernate, some migrate, and some do both. And in temperate climates,
like Florida, bats may be able to stay year-round.
