Have you eaten a plece of fresh fruit today? Eating healthy foods is the key to a long disease-free life. It is important that we keep a diet rich in vitamins and nutrients to maintain good health. Eating in a healthy way can be a difficult task. Oftentimes the foods we think are healthy really are not good for us at all. Additionally, many people do not have access to the fresh fruits and vegetables that are the key to a healthy diet. There are many things we can do to make sure people can eat a healthy diet. The United States government needs to step in and help. First of all, fast food restaurants are a prime source of unhealthy foods. The food that is served at fast food restaurants has large amounts of fat and calories. All restaurants should be required by law to post the nutritional Information of their food. That way consumers will know the amount of fat, calories, and sugar they are putting into their bodies. They will also see the types of vitamins and nutrients present in their food choices. Right now, only some restaurants post this information in their menus. Another solution to this problem is to educate consumers about healthy food choices. There are many people who don't realize what they are putting into their bodies is bad for them. The government should offer free classes to teach people how to identify "bad" foods and how to cook their own healthy meals. The government also needs to make sure that everyone has access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Some people that live in rural parts of the country have to drive over 50 miles to get to a grocery store! As a result, they buy a lot of their food at the local convenience store. Most convenience stores do not sell fresh fruits and vegetables-they mostly sell soda, chips, and candy. The government needs to set up a system to deliver fruits and vegetables to rural areas. Which is the most likely reason the author chose a problem-and-solution format to organize this passage? 1. to describe the effect healthy eating has on society

2. to explain how events in a person's life can lead to unhealthy eating

3. to compare types of popular foods in the United States during different time periods

Read this passage: many manufacturers prefer plastic as a material for containers because it can be molded into many shapes. but plastic is not very strong. it must be fused with glass or steel for strength. it is also not very durable. even the strongest plastic can break under enough pressure. the biggest disadvantage to using plastic is that it does not decompose. while plastic can be recycled, doing so is tedious and difficult. while it may be more expensive and difficult to work with, aluminum is a much stronger building material with far greater tensile strength. it conducts electricity because it is metal. best of all, aluminum is very easy to recycle. even if it is thrown away, it decomposes much more quickly than most manufacturing materials. how does the compare-and-contrast organizational pattern of the passage support the author's purpose? a. the passage gradually leads up to the point about decomposition to inform the reader about the importance of recycling plastics. b. the passage lists the advantages and disadvantages of each material to make a case for the use of plastic and not aluminum in containers. c. the passage begins with a description of plastic's problems in order to call attention to the good qualities of aluminum. d. the passage shows the superiority of aluminum in order to make a case for the production of stronger plastics.
