The Author uses characters actions to portray emotion as well as theme due to the reaction that characters have to one another, as well as the sacrifices they make.

Authors use emotion and actions such as "well knowing that money for the long sad journey must be wed and feeling as if she could do anything to add a little to the sum for her father".  The mother in this situation can also be used in this theme as a marytr for her children. She wants to grieve over her husband, but gets up and has her children help her find a solution rather than roll around in sorrow.
