Neither Dia nor Zia Davis were happy with their names; it was as if their parents conspired to ensure they would never be able to reach too far beyond their status as twins. As babies and toddlers, it was fine to be dressed in the same outfit and given the same toys and placed in the same playpen. As they grew, it was amusing to hear people trip over their names and confuse their identities. In many ways, the twins felt like a single unit: definitely stronger together than apart. Then they started school. Despite their names and appearances being nearly identical, Dia and Zia showed themselves to be very different when it came to academic. Dia was the artistic type, preferring paint and palette, whereas Zia was the mathematical type, preferring protractors and parallelograms. At home, their parents encouraged the girls to peruse their individual skills and not let the expectations of others influence them; this was often easier said than done.

In high school, Zia earned excellent grades in math and science, while Dia’s parents received letters concerning her subpar performance in those subjects. Dia maintained that she was doing her best, but no matter how many tutoring sessions she had, the material would never make sense to her. She claimed that math and science were “Zia’s things” and that she was content being the “darling” of the art department.

One day there was an announcement at school
