Edgar Allan Poe had a life marked with great sorrows. Having lost his parents to tuberculosis at a very young age, he was separated from his siblings and sent to live with his foster parents, John and Frances Allan. He shared a loving relationship with his foster mother, but not with his foster father. Just as it seemed that his life was improving when he fell in love and got married, his beloved wife Virginia died of tuberculosis. Two years later, Edgar Allan Poe also died in mysterious circumstances. Based on what you know and have learned about Edgar Allan Poe’s life, do you think he relates to his deranged narrators? Why or why not? Which aspects of his life seem similar to Gothic elements and conventions?
