In order to survive Brian had to adapt to his new location and learn new skills. He taught himself how to spear fish and to start a fire as well as learn how to see birds despite their camouflage. However he also ran into many problems along the way like wildlife specifically a moose but the important thing is he never stopped striving for survival which is ultimately the reason he did in fact survive.
