this is the essay
The speech is considered one of Kennedyâs best, both a notable moment of the Cold War and a high point of the New Frontier. It was a great morale boost for West Berliners, who lived in an enclave deep inside East Germany and feared a possible East German occupation. Speaking from a platform erected on the steps of Rathaus Schöneberg for an audience of 450,000, Kennedy said: Two thousand years ago, the proudest boast was civis romanus sum [âI am a Roman citizenâ]. Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is âIch bin ein Berliner!â⊠All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words âIch bin ein Berliner!â. Kennedy used the phrase twice in his speech, including at the end, pronouncing the sentence with his Boston accent and reading from his note âish bin ein Bearleenerâ, which he had written out using English spelling habits to indicate an approximation of the German pronunciation. Another phrase in the speech was also spoken in German, âLassâ sie nach Berlin kommenâ (âLet them come to Berlinâ), addressed at those who claimed âwe can work with the Communistsâ. While the immediate response from the West German population was positive, the Soviet authorities were less pleased with the combative Lass sie nach Berlin kommen. Only two weeks before, Kennedy had spoken in a more conciliatory tone, speaking of âimproving relations with the Soviet Unionâ: in response to Kennedyâs Berlin speech, Nikita Khrushchev, days later, remarked that âone would think that the speeches were made by two different Presidentsâ.

Which word best describes the author's tone in this excerpt from "that spot" by jack london? i donât think much of stephen mackaye any more, though i used to swear by him. i know that in those days i loved him more than my own brother. if ever i meet stephen mackaye again, i shall not be responsible for my actions. it passes beyond me that a man with whom i shared food and blanket, and with whom i mushed over the chilcoot trail, should turn out the way he did. i always sized steve up as a square man, a kindly comrade, without an iota of anything vindictive or malicious in his nature. i shall never trust my judgment in men again. why, i nursed that man through typhoid fever; we starved together on the headwaters of the stewart; and he saved my life on the little salmon. and now, after the years we were together, all i can say of stephen mackaye is that he is the meanest man i ever knew. a. excited b. ironic c. indignant d. playful
