How does Bram stoker portray the characters of mins and Lucy in his gothic novel Dracula

Stoker gives a contrasting view of this notion in “ Dracula.” While the main characters, Lucy and Mina, are clearly opposite in personality, they are both portrayed as unequal, defenseless objects that are to be protected and desired. However, one woman’s fate is determined by her weakness, while the other is determined by her strength.

Lucy and Mina are the two female characters in Dracula. Mina is Lucy's friend who becomes a vampire like Lucy. Lucy is the first victim of vampirism by Count Dracula. She is also the character courted by three men and the one who is studied and helped by Dr. Van Helsing and Dr. Seward. Lucy, before vampirism, is described as a very beautiful, angelic, and sexual character. Her relationships with her suitors is very distinct in comparison to Mina and Jonathan. After vampirism, Lucy is described as pale, tired, anemic, and has strangely long canine teeth. 

Mina is Lucy's best friend who strongly contrasts Lucy's character. Mina is the perfect example of a stereotypical Victorian female role; she's emotional, reserved, and sweet. Mina is described throughout the novel as the motherly figure to the other characters. She takes care of Lucy through her sleepwalking episodes and comforts the male roles. Mina may not suffer the same fate as Lucy, but that doesn't mean she hasn't experienced it. It is theorized that it is because of Mina's innocents that they were able to slay Dracula. Mina has, for the majority, been well informed about the dangers of Dracula, while Lucy is unaware – Mina is protected, while Lucy is vulnerable.

All in all, the depiction of women's role in the Victorian era, is quite accurate. During this time-frame, women were caught in a time of change, which is well depicted by the two characters; changing from the standard Victorian woman, Mina, to the indifferent Lucy. Mina is the example of what society expects from a Victorian women, while Lucy is a "rebel" with her independence.
