A complex sentence is a simple sentence with subordinate clause joined to it. A subordinate clause depends on another clause to complete an idea, so we call subordinate clauses dependent clauses. E.g.

She smiles when she is happy. (Independent clause + dependent clause)

A compound sentence has two or more simple sentences joined together, usually with a comma and a coordinating conjunction. E.g.

She smiled, and she laughed. (Two sentences joined with a comma + coordinator.)

HOW TO IDENTIFY ?

1. The most basic type of sentence is a simple sentence.

2.If two clauses are connected with a coordinating conjunction, it's a compound sentence.

3. If two clauses are connected with a subordinating conjunction, it's a complex sentence.
