Read the excerpt from “Albert Schweitzer: A Life of Service and Sacrifice.” By the time Albert was twenty-one years old, it was clear to his friends and family that he was a very gifted man who would succeed in any career. Albert was also aware of his many talents, but instead of thinking about success, he was filled with feelings of gratitude. He began to develop the idea that he ought to pay something back for all of the good fortune in his life. He created an unusual life plan.
