Benjamin Banneker was America's first recognized black scientist. Raised in Maryland before the American Revolution, Banneker attended
an integrated school where his aptitude for mathematics and astronomy soon became evident. Late in 1789 he was able to predict correctly a solar
eclipse. Shortly thereafter, he began publishing an almanac, which appeared annually for a number of years. Banneker was also a surveyor who
helped to plan Washington, D. C. He died in 1806.
