Self-determination is the ability to decide one's own fate or course of action freely and without compulsion. The United States fought a war of independence against Britain for that right in the 1700s. However in America many have not experienced the right to self-determination. Enslaved Africans were considered property and could be forced to do whatever their owners wanted. Women for centuries lacked self-determination in many areas of their lives as well. What obstacles still exist to self-determination today? Is self-determination possible for all Americans? For all humans?
