Gandar had always been a hard worker, dedicated to his family. He was devoted to his parents, visiting often and sharing what money he could to keep them comfortable. Kindly and compassionate with family, he was at the same time a determined, intelligent businessman. After years of hard work and sound decisions, Gandar had built up his business as a Delhi chaat wallah, selling India's popular snacks first from a cart and then from a small storefront. Recently, his old friend Manish invited him to America to run one of Manish's restaurants. Gandar's wife, Amita, was thrilled, but his mother was not. "You will hate it there," she warned. "You will feel out of place." Paragraph 3
"Five years!" wailed his mother, who had long been afraid of change. "Your father is ill now. If you leave for five years, you may never see him again."

Paragraph 4
"Don't worry," Amita said, reassuring her mother-in-law. "Of course we will fly back to visit you. That is what airplanes are for."

Paragraph 5
"You are really going, then?" Gandar's mother asked, a quiver in her voice.
