Nobody Town The two men came into town after the sun went down. One was a short, stocky, and bald fellow. He appeared jovial as his cheeks seemed to stretch and make a permanent smile. The happy man was carrying an unusually long briefcase-almost as long as an umbrella. The other man, however, seemed grave. There was nothing extraordinary about him except the fact that he was carrying a bird in a cage. The ordinary man kept on walking on the sidewalk while the happy man kept coming in and out of the stores. The visit from these two men had created quite a stir in the little town of Nobody. Everybody in the town came out to the balcony, front yard, and windows to catch a glimpse of the happy man and the ordinary man. Everybody in town hoped the two men would stay, at least for the night. Select the correct answer. Which of these is true about the story?
A. The ordinary man highlights the happy man's odd nature.
B. The setting reveals Nobody as a little, happening town.
C. The happy man serves as the antagonist in the story.
D. The unusually long briefcase solves the mystery of the story.

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows. ‘you make me feel uncivilized, daisy,’ i confessed on my second glass of corky but rather impressive claret. ‘can’t you talk about crops or something? ’ i meant nothing in particular by this remark but it was taken up in an unexpected way. ‘civilization’s going to pieces,’ broke out tom violently. ‘i’ve gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things. have you read ‘the rise of the coloured empires’ by this man goddard? ’ ‘why, no,’ i answered, rather surprised by his tone. ‘well, it’s a fine book, and everybody ought to read it. the idea is if we don’t look out the white race will be—will be utterly submerged. it’s all scientific stuff; it’s been proved.’ in this passage, tom’s ideas about race relations come off as uncivilized. what literary device is fitzgerald using here?
