Read the passage. In which two ways are the narrator and her friend Kim different? When I got to class, the teacher was nowhere to be seen. As I sat down, my best friend Kim came to my desk. “Hey, did you do the math homework?” Kim asked. “Yeah,” I said, “My mom helped me with it.” Suddenly, the class, which was full of noisy students, fell silent. I looked up, but it was only Melanie entering the room. She was the most unpopular student in our class. Like everybody else, I went back to ignoring her. But she came to my desk. In a small voice she said, “Please, c-can you help me with the math homework?” I didn’t say anything. I was so shocked. Finally I opened my mouth and said, “No.” The rest of the students began to giggle. Melanie looked crushed, and I began to regret what I had said. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to help her, but I was afraid that she would want to hang out with me. I might become unpopular like her! Suddenly Kim stood up. “I’m not very good at math,” she said. “But I can help you if you want.” Both Melanie and I looked at her in shock. Kim had already taken out her notebook. Smiling at Melanie, she handed it over. The narrator is friendly; Kim likes being alone. The narrator cares about popularity; Kim does not. The narrator is good at schoolwork; Kim is not. The narrator is cowardly; Kim is courageous. The narrator is popular; Kim is unpopular.
