Women are required to provide children and run households after marriage. Large families were the rule because there was such a high mortality rate for children and babies. Many Elizabethan women arranged for their children to be cared for if they died during childbirth.

Queen Elizabeth, I was one of the Elizabethan women who never married because she didn’t want to be inferior to men. She also didn’t want to share her throne with a man. Thus, she remained single throughout her life because marrying would have meant giving up her autonomy as a monarch.
