As the price of gasoline in the United States ascends and descends with little warning, and little rationale, consumers are left with many questions and few concrete answers. If many consumers feel as though they are in the dark, and subject to whatever price is posted at their local gas station, there’s good reason to think that control of these financially-impactful situations is in someone else hands—it is. Control over the gasoline price gauging, however, can very much be controlled by consumers. It is often said that there is power in numbers; there is. Consider that the price of gas is predominantly dominated by supply and demand. When there is great demand, supply struggles to keep up, and when demand is greater than supply, prices rise. Conversely, when demand is low and supply remains steady, prices fall. As a consumer group, U. S. drivers could, in an extreme example, opt en masse to take public transportation, carpool, or even work from home if that option is available. Imagine how such a widespread decision might affect gas prices. With fewer drivers, there is a decreased demand for gas and prices would ease.
Remember that control is only as real as we, as consumers, allow it to be. The methods for regaining control may appear extreme, but desperate times call for desperate measures (even if they’re not so “desperate”), and ultimately, extreme measures have extreme impact, even on big businesses that set the price of gasoline.
