What is onomatopoeia? When a word sounds like the thing it describes. In other words, when words mimic sounds. Think about a bursting balloon or an exploding kernel of corn. What sound do they make? A pop! We also use the word "pop" as a verb to describe these actions. The balloon pops. We pop the corn. To get the full effect of onomatopoetic words, it helps to say them out loud.
