This saying was true for Louise Nevelson, one of the world's most celebrated sculptural artists. Until Louise Nevelson's time, sculptures were made primarily of carved stone or poured metal. Louise Nevelson, however, created completely different types of sculptures. Hers were assembled from ordinary objects. Artists of the first half of the twentieth century were inventive in their subject matter and technique. It was an exciting time in the art world. Even among innovators, Nevelson distinguished herself. Instead of cutting stone or pouring metal, she built her art. She deliberately sought discarded items (she called them "found materials") such as pieces of wood, tin cans, and pieces of items out of trash cans.
