Carter Druse Character Analysis; A Horsemen in the Sky:

During the American Civil War, Carter Druse, the protagonist of the novel, is a private in the Union Army. While he fought for the Union, Druse was raised in the Confederate State of Virginia. He was born to a life of luxury and sophistication, which he gladly gave up and entered the Union Regiment to pursue his Civil War conscience. This causes a conflict between him and his father, because while they both love each other, they are now fighting for armies and ideologies that contradict them. The Druse is sometimes referred to as noble and brave. Since leaving his childhood home, through his courage and strength of character, he received the praise of his comrades and superiors. Druse spends the whole story (apart from the flashback to the morning he left his family home) lying in a thicket, posted in a precarious position as a sentry to protect many Union Regiments. When Druse's father, who is doing reconnaissance for the opposing Confederate army, discovers the Union regiments that Druse is supposed to defend, his love for his father and sense of justice and morality come to a head. Druse is forced to determine whether to uphold his duty as a soldier (by killing his father) or to let his father live, thereby failing to fulfill his duty and endangering the lives of his fellow men. Druse decides to kill his father, and he becomes his own man in the process. The killing of the horseman also marks the culmination of a period of slavery by the end of one generation of the Druse family.
