Read the following plot summary. Then, answer the question that follows. On the steamer headed for Virginia, Cecily was surrounded by her fellow Englishmen, and the new step she was taking didn't seem so frightening, but when the ship pulled into the harbor and the passengers disembarked, she began to doubt her sanity. In 1820, young ladies did not start "from scratch" in a new country without friends or family to shelter or support them, but Cecily's brother was here in this massive, unsettled country, and she was determined to find him. Working as a seamstress for wagon trains heading westward, she moved slowly across the nation, showing her engraving of Benjamin's face to anyone she met. After reaching the Rocky Mountains, she learned that a young Englishman was sick with cholera, and she quickly located her very sick brother. Nursing him through the worst of the disease, she eventually strengthened him enough to travel. They joined a new wagon train and made it to the Oregon country, where Benjamin purchased a section of land, and he and Cecily began the hard work of creating a new home together.

Which of the following correspondents would be a logical choice for a character letter from Cecily?

A Benjamin

B the ship's captain

C Aunt Lucy in Shropshire, England

Select the correct answer. lyric poems often deal with intense emotions. which statement best describes the shift in emotion in "lift every voice and sing" as it moves from the first into the second stanza? lift every voice and sing till earth and heaven ring, ring with the harmonies of liberty; let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies, let it resound loud as the rolling sea. sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, facing the rising sun of our new day begun let us march on till victory is won. stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod, felt in the days when hope unborn had died; yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet come to the place for which our fathers sighed? we have come over a way that with tears has been watered, we have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. a. the joyful call of the first stanza gives way to a bitter recounting of history in the second. b. the first stanza's anger is replaced by the second stanza's resignation. c. the poem moves from a sense of wonder in the first stanza toward a sense of perplexity in the second. d. there is no change between the first stanza and the second. the emotions are the same in both.

Read sentence 13 from the draft. some plants retain a great deal of their foliage through much of the spring and summer, but the leaves do not retain their green color for long. which detail would be best to add after sentence 13 to develop the topic? a. since the green color of the leaves that are bright and abundant during the warmer months will disappear by the time it is fall, it is important that the leaves are trimmed and kept freshly cut so that they will last for as long as possible. b. while the temperature outside may dictate when the fall colors of leaves appear, it is only one of many environmental factors that play a part in the changing of colors from green leaves to fall-colored leaves during the cooler months. c. if people want to enjoy the green color of leaves longer, trees should be planted where the environment is warmer and the days longer because chlorophyll in the leaves can only be manufactured and replaced with sunlight and warmth. d. the green chlorophyll normally masks the fall-colored pigments during the warmer months, but as sunlight becomes less abundant and trees become frozen, the fall colors of leaves become more visible as chlorophyll disappears.
