story : 1 Perhaps the only list longer than Lin-Manuel Miranda's awards is his list of talents: composer, playwright, singer, actor. Miranda does it all and all with enormous success!
2 Born in New York City in 1980, Miranda was immersed in music and dance from an early age. His parents, immigrants from Puerto Rico, settled in the predominately Latino area of Manhattan known as Inwood. There, the Miranda family's musical interests were shaped by a variety of cultural and artistic influences, including hip-hop, rhythm and blues, and Latin music.

"My favorite book growing up was Chuck Amuck by Chuck Jones. I think I bought it as a kid because of the included flip-book: flip the pages, and Wile E. Coyote chases the Road Runner down the margins of the page. But it's also one of the most beautiful books about the creative process I've ever read."
—Lin-Manuel Miranda
Chuck Amuck: The Life and Times of an Animated Cartoonist is the autobiographical account of Chuck Jones, the creator of Warner Bros.' Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, pepé
Le Pew, and Marvin Martian.
3 While attending Wesleyan University, Miranda began developing the music and lyrics for his first musical, In the Heights. The production was based on a book by Quiara Alegria Hudes, also of Puerto Rican descent. Miranda's stage version debuted at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Connecticut in 2005. It was moved to Off-Broadway status in 2007. The show opened on Broadway in 2008. The playwright's first Broadway show garnered four Tony Awards: Best Orchestrations, Best Choreography, Best Score, and Best Musical. Miranda himself played the leading role, singing and dancing his way to stardom as Usnavi, a bodega owner who serves as the play's narrator. The plot highlights the heartbreaks and hopes of the Latino community in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City, a story close to Miranda's heart.

Read the following short excerpt of student writing. use your vocabulary and grammar knowledge to determine which suggestions you would make to improve his or her grammar and word choice. i really thought she loved me but i discovered her grave betrayal one afternoon. it was easy to figure out because she accidentally sent a text to me that was meant for him. i was confused by the text because it said, "don't tell mike." i felt insulted that she thought she could get away with this infidelity. at first i felt very angry bitter and hateful but then i felt so hopeless and depressed. i longed for her to call me. i thought if i could just hear her pleasing voice, maybe then i would not be filled with such bitterness. instead of calling her i talked to another friend who is good at listening and feeling my pain. talking with her makes me feel euphoric. i think i may be on the road to recovery.what word would you suggest to replace the underlined word or words in this excerpt? instead of calling her, i talked to another friend who is (good at listening and feeling my pain). talking with her makes me feel euphoric. amorous sentimental empathetic grave

1. find at least 9 adjectives from this opening passage used to describe the setting of the story- "to build a fire" setting: day had broken cold and gray, exceedingly cold and gray, when the man turned aside from the main yukon trail and climbed the high earth-bank, where a dim and little-travelled trail led eastward through the fat spruce timberland. it was a steep bank, and he paused for breath at the top, excusing the act to himself by looking at his watch. it was nine o'clock. there was no sun nor hint of sun, through there was not a cloud in the sky. it was a clear day, and yet there seemed an intangible pall over the face of things, subtle gloom that made the day dark, and that was due to the absence of sun. this fact did not worry the man. he was used to the lack of sun. it had been days since he had seen the sun, and he knew that a few more days must pass before that cheerful orb, due south, would just peep above the sky-line and dip immediately from view.
