Edward Kennedy served in the U. S. Senate from the state of Massachusetts for more than 40 years. In 1964, Kennedy supported the Civil Rights Act. This act made it against the law to judge others because of their race. It was the first of many important laws that Kennedy supported. Kennedy worked for equal rights for women and people with disabilities. He also worked to improve housing, health care, and education for the poor.
