Why is it ironic that the mother asks her child to go to church in the story "Ballad of Birmingham"

"Ballad of Birmingham" is a story about how a young girl died in a church because a bomb has exploded in the girl's location. It show irony when the mother asks her daughter to go to church instead of going to join the rally to protest the racial freedom. Ironic means, when happening in the opposite way to what is expected, and typically causing wry amusement because of this. The mother insisted to let her daughter go to church instead of the rally, because she thought that the church her daughter will go in is safe and peaceful. In the end her daughter was known to have died because of the explosion.
