1. "During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low." - adjectives & imagery = solemn, dreary & foreboding mood (persists throughout the narrative)

2. A view of "the gray sedge, and the ghastly tree-stems, and the vacant and eye-like windows." = sense of mingled mystery, gloom, and caution; the House of Usher is not a welcoming place & should be entered with trepidation

3. Poe uses phrases like "insufferable gloom" (1265) along with other unsettling words to stress the tone of horror. In addition, the house evokes suspense as it strikes the reader with curiosity as to why the building poses such a horrible and uncomfortable feeling.
