The passage shown above is a very important point in the narrative, which in addition to foreshadowing how Roger will become a cruel boy, shows how the concepts of civility are being suppressed by the eminent savagery that the environment provokes in these boys, especially in relation to the younger who start to develop a strong violence, cruelty and grandeur in the youngest. This can be seen when, in spite of his friends, Roger feels the right to torment Henry, the youngest boy and in the view of Roger more fragile and subordinate, which is the first indication of torture, dominance and manipulation that he will not only exercise in Henry, but in the other smaller and younger boys.
