Ambiguity. Was Nathaniel Hawthorne a feminist, misogynist or just an objective chronicler of the Puritan Era? Choose one approach. Look at the female characters in the novel: Hester, Mistress Hibbins, Pearl, and the “marketplace women.” Provide textual evidence to support your opinion. You must be consistent. If he is a feminist, then prove it with each character/group. If he is a misogynist, then prove it with each character/group. If he is chronicling the time period with different “types” of females, then prove that., but for what purpose? Textual evidence (quote the text with page numbers). Four separate evidence paragraphs for each category (no need for intro and conclusion.)
