5. Where could Henry have gone after this? On the Bridge
The crowd in the streets is thick at midday, but you follow the banks of the Thames toward the London Bridge. You can hear fishermen showing off their hauls at the docks and sailors calling out from boats on the water. People on the docks are gathered around makeshift tabletops on barrels, openly gambling or listening to astrologists tell their horoscopes.

“Protect your neck, little boy?” a woman calls out to you, holding up a necklace with a small ringing bell. “Or maybe your mum’s? Guaranteed protection against the Plague, helped hundreds survive last year…”

You turn away and push past a crowd watching a display of bear-baiting. You know it’s a popular sport here in town, but it’s still scary to you and you look away. When the bear roars in pain, the crowd starts laughing and cheering. You walk faster.

When you finally get to the bridge, it’s hard to imagine a script could still be here. This is the only bridge connecting north and south London, so it has a lot of foot traffic. Also, the heads of traitors to the crown peer down from spikes today. You can’t imagine Henry wanting to stay here for any length of time.

Towards the far side, you start to notice small pieces of torn-up parchment on the bridge. Maybe it’s the script! You gather them all up, and try to sort them out.

each year on this day, i make it a point to listen to dr. martin luther king jr.’s great “i have a dream” speech. it’s electrifying every single time.

the content of dr. king’s speech, his inspiring presence, and the moment in history all came together to make the iconic “i have a dream” speech the defining moment of the american civil rights movement. but there are several other reasons why this speech, delivered over 50 years ago, remains an example of one of the best speeches in american history.

since part of my job is to people become better presenters, i’ve noticed several techniques that we can all learn from and be inspired by in this magnificent speech.

it’s anchored in a powerful related location

in most cases, you can’t handpick the spot to give a presentation, as mlk did for supreme symbolic effect when he stood on the steps of the lincoln memorial and echoed the opening words of the gettysburg address (“five score years ago . . ). but you absolutely can amplify your message by adapting it to your setting and location.

a-audience (who is this poem mostly for)

p-purpose (was it to convince, inspire, etc. the audience)

s-speaker (can be the author or another character, like is a child, adult, woman, elderly, animal narrating the poem)

tone- the mood the reader gets from this poem

mood- the mood the author had with their own poem

meaning- what do you think the meaning is?

message- what is the author trying to explain to the audience? like what is the theme?

if you still don't get it try showing everyone the poem so they could unravel it
