this is my thesis: martin luther king jr. uses figurative language like metaphors in this letter to appeal to the audience emotionally and an urgent tone to make his text important.

I. Hook: This is not the start of racial injustice, it's been around for hundreds of years and hasn't changed since. Until 1955, when Martin Luther King Jr. joined the movement. He would help fight racial injustice until his death in 1968.

A. Bridge: Martin Luther King Jr. letter to the church leaders “We who engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive. We bring it out in the open where it can be seen and dealt with”.

B. Thesis: Martin used many forms of language and structure to captivate his audience.  

II. Topic Sentence: The structure of a sentence is very crucial if you are wanting to persuade people to think a certain way like Martin Luther King Jr. did.

A. Example, Reason, Detail, or Fact from the text: When Martin is writing from his cell in Birmingham jail, he uses this structure. He said “...Its ugly record of police brutality is known in every section of this country... These are the hard, brutal, and unbelievable facts.”

B. Explanation: Martin didn’t feel that this should go on this way so he wrote this to the church leaders in hope they would fight against racial injustice.

C. Example, Reason, Detail, or Fact from the text: In the next paragraph, Martin writes more information that is tethered to the last one in a way. “...as you seek to explain to your six-year-old daughter why she can't go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and see tears welling up in her little eyes when she is told that Funtown is closed to colored children”.

D. Explanation: The corruptness of society back then was messed up and needed fixing, this example of what happens leads to colored children growing up to hate white people or whoever supported it.  

III. Topic Sentence: Using figurative language is key when you are wanting to captivate a crowd.

A. Example, Reason, Detail, or Fact from the text: “I guess it is easy for those who have never felt the stinging darts of segregation to say wait.” Martin used an Allusion to draw attention closer and pinpoint it so his audience could also understand better.

B. Explanation: The church leaders haven't felt the pain that the colored people are going through, so they shouldn't have a say to wait longer when they are at fault.

C. Example, Reason, Detail, or Fact from the text: There is no stopping the undeniable fact that colored people can and are the same as white people. Letter to church leaders, “when you see the vast majority of your twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an air-tight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society...”

D. Explanation: Colored people back then didn't have a chance at life and would fall into poverty because most jobs were closed to them.
