According to the play's Overture, The Crucible playwright, Arthur Miller, set his political allegory in Salem Massachusetts, in the spring
of the year 1692. However, we know that Miller wrote the play during
the McCarthy era of the 1950's. What makes the play an allegory is
the political climate shared by both time periods; a climate of
interrogation, prosecution, and persecution based on hearsay
(accusations without real evidence) and the accused being considered
guilty until proven innocent.
