(1) The Harlem Renaissance took place in New York City in the 1920s and early 1930s. It was a time when African Americans produced a collection of great literature, music, and art. For the first time in the history of the United States, white society began to notice African American writers, musicians, and artists. (2) During the Harlem Renaissance, jazz and blues as sung by Bessie Smith and played by Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington filled the jazz clubs of Harlem.
