him roll an enormous boulder up a hill only for it to roll back down

again once he's finished.

In Ernest Hemingway's novel The Old Man and the Sea, a fisherman

struggles for several days to reel in an enormous fish. When he finally

succeeds, sharks eat the fish before the fisherman is able to get it

back to shore.

The old man strives to capture the fish and the young boy has his own limitations. They story gives a contrast between the old man and the sea, also the boy. The sea is mighty and  rough but the old man has experience but is weak.

The smell of the tar , salt and fish blood is compared to the dazzling light water, isolation etc.

All the elements show the physical transformations a person , sea, people, boy and the fish experience with the passage of time.
