1. Nestled high in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, Crater Lake is a natural marvel with an explosive history. Ten thousand years ago, a mountainous volcano called Mount Mazama dominated the region, stretching almost 12,000 feet into the sky. Then, around eight thousand years ago, the volcano erupted, sending plumes of hot gas and ash shooting into the atmosphere. Magma gushed out of the volcano and burned the surrounding forest thirty miles in every direction. Finally, the magma chamber inside of the volcano shifted and collapsed, transforming the mountain completely. In Mount Mazama’s place sat a caldera, a giant bowl-shaped depression filled with rock fragments, ash, and other debris. Over time, the ground inside the caldera cooled. Rain and groundwater filled the caldera first in small pools until it eventually grew very deep with water. Underneath the water, another small volcano began to grow and inch its way toward the surface. Additional eruptions caused this volcano’s summit to break through the surface. This summit, known today as Wizard Island, is a prominent feature of what has become Crater Lake.
