At the beginning of the story, the narrator's perspective of the situation was that he wasn't insane for commiting the crime that he committed. The narrator believed that the death of the old man was justified and that the old man deserved it. This led to the narrator believing that he doesn't deserve any punishments. However, when the cops came to investigate the whole situation, the narrator could not hold in the guilt that he was feeling at the time, so he felt that the only thing to do was to confess his wrongdoings and where the corpse of the old man was located. I believe that the reason why the narrator was pressured to confess was because he was going insane mentally, causing him to feel an extreme amount of paranoia, fear, and guilt. The narrator thought that the officers could hear what he was thinking and the officers were mocking him because of this.
