Amy Tan's "Two Kinds" reveals that mothers and daughters are not of the same personalities.  They are created as individuals with individual lives to live, individual missions to fulfill, and individual goals to achieve.

In this short story, Amy Tan illustrates her life in Jing-Mei.  Some daughters are sheepishly obedient to their mothers, while others follow their own ways.  Amy Tan follows her own mind against her mother’s wishes.

A daughter has her own life to live.  The short story "Two Kinds" was written in 1985 and in 1989 incorporated into Amy Tan's successful novel titled "Joy Luck Club," which was later adapted into a film in 1993 by the same title.  Through "Two Kinds" Amy Tan urges mothers to realize that they cannot merge their identities with their daughters'.  Parents and children have different lives; they only cross life paths.  This crossing of paths must not be confused with the sameness of identity and lifestyle.
