I am standing dozens of miles away from a volcano, watching the opening stages of an eruption through a pair of binoculars. I am seeing a large plume of steam forming near the crater. Over the course of a few hours, the northeast side of the steep-sided cone begins to bulge, and there have been two very small (but noticeable) tremors. I know that I should get to high ground to avoid the pyroclastic flow and lateral blast that is sure to result from the eruption.
