The above sentence shows an example of an analogy, where Life is considered as an empty canvas which got coloured differently at different phases of it, here this saying depicts the relation of life with the time that time can not be reveresed so whtever happens in life can not be erased.

An analogy can be introduced as a textual development where the significance of one component is moved to another component, in an abstract and interpretative manner, and may introduce an illustration, or likeness, all the while.  

Analogies are generally utilized in sonnets and fables phrases, since it makes the language more sensitive, wonderful and significant.

Revenge is never full, it kills the soul like poison.

The above sentence shows an example of an analogy, where "revenge" is compared to "poison" in relation to its effect on human life.
