The writer claims in the beginning of the article itself that he lacks patience and is easily intimidated by everything in the country. He is aware of his weakness but still he aspires to change the ways how young black children start to perceive the world around them.

The writer only seeks for a chance to tell the young children that life for them does not grow grimmer and darker as told by their folks. He wants to make sure that the children are imbibed with positivity and opportunities. He wants to end the cycle of telling black children about how miserable life is for them ahead.

In this way, he invokes the rhetorical strategy of ethos by openly discussing about his weakness yet arguing his unfettering aspiration to change the minds of young black children.
