Direct characterization is when the author specifically says the traits of the character. In this example, the author is telling you exactly how Zach and Marie feel about each other. In the other examples, the author uses indirect characterization. Indirect characterization is when the author shows you the traits of a character through his or her thoughts, actions, effects on others, speech, and looks.

on the other side of the picture, we must learn also to know that guerilla warfare against the germans in, let us say serbia or norway, us; that a successful russian offensive against the germans us; and that british successes on land or sea in any part of the world strengthen our hands.
