Read the following excerpt, then select any inferences that you would make based on the text. The Pirate King by Joan McCarthy When Dad came back, he grabbed a burger and began piling it with fixings. I asked how The Pirate got hurt. Dad thought that after being cold and wet all week, the cat couldn't resist sitting in the sun on his favorite perch. He was sitting on the piling when Dad left on the 2:15 boat. Dad said he noticed the tide was in and the piling was surrounded by water. That worried him. He didn't see the cat for the rest of the afternoon, and when the next shift came on, he decided to have a look under the dock. That's where he found The Pirate, lying just out of the water, soaking wet and all cut up. Dad figured the gull had knocked him off into the water and then really worked him over. I reached down and touched the wet fur."I wouldn't do that when he's awake, Katie," Dad said."As hurt as he is, I had to put gloves on to pick him up. He's a wild one, not somebody's sweet kitty. You be careful." What inferences can you make based on the text? Katie has a dog. Katie's family has a pool. Katie and her family live by the sea. Katie doesn't like cats. The Pirate is a stray cat.
