The narrator was his son and bond between father and son was unbreakable until the father left on his canoe and never came back.However the son obviously was very close with his father and loved and cared about him still because he still put food out for him even when the father never would return or be seen/heard from again. And even though it was years later the boy still cared about his father and tried to check up on him and find him even after all of these years passed. Which showed how much the son cared about his father and how strong the bond between the father and son must have really been.
