Now both teams were competing for the championship in the final game, and the desire to beat the other team had grown to epic proportions.

 Rivalry means the two of them are competing over an object or against each other. The rivalry between the two  high schools in the passage "have always been competitive" they've grown and expanded in the weeks before the basketball championship, "they had met twice over the season, and the games were intense."   It also mentions "the desire to beat the other team had grown to epic proportions."
