Offred is the protagonist of the book "The Handmaid's Tale". Although this book had a very political narrative and with a strong feminist bias, Offred is far from being considered an example of a feminist heroine. Offred is indeed a kind, caring and empathetic woman, we can see that when she narrates scenes with her family and friends, before Gilead.

However, Offred is an extremely passive woman to the adverse situations to which she is submitted. We can see this, when she shows fear and even a certain fear to join the resistance against Gilead. In addition, she narrates the facts that led to the construction of Gilead with a certain humor that gives the feeling that she finds life in Gilead bearable, although not great.

Offred also showed passivity when he tried to flee the USA when Gilead was being built. She lacked the willpower to fight for her escape and let herself be guided and protected by Nick, proving her passive and dependent character.
