This story is set in the American Midwest during the early 1900s.  

Jimmy Valentine is a skilled safe-cracker and does time in prison.  He is allowed to go back into society when he is paroled.  The main characters are as follows:  Jimmy Valentine, Mike Dolan - his partner in crime, Jimmy's love of his life - Annabel Adams.  Annabel's family is also a part of the story.  

In the beginning, the warden reminds Jimmy that he is not a bad person, just that he has a bad habit of cracking safes.  He goes to his friends  - which is in a hotel - and finds his stashed tools that he used to use to crack safes.  Jimmy wants to rob another bank, but he sees a girl and falls in love.  Yep, that quick!  He lies about his name and is accepted into his love's family.  Would you believe that Annabel is the banker's daughter???  Story goes on as Agatha is locked in the safe.  She is going to run out of air and die.  Oh, but who will be able to save her?  

This story is really about how a person can change - but how Jimmy - who wanted to change, has his past catch up with him.  He starts robbing again.  Love can change people.  The irony in the story is that he is able to forget that he is a robber/burgler - due to the love of Annabel.  But, remember that she is the banker's daughter and this puts Jimmy right where he can rob again.
