one of the main literary devices utilized in jane eyre is allusion, specifically allusions to the bible, greek and roman mythology, and also the works of other writers. allusions to other literature bronte to demonstrate jane’s education. allusions to the bible reflect the cultural conditions at the time. allusions were fairly typical for victorian literature of the nineteenth century. for example, in the chapter 11 we see fairytale elements that could be an allusion to the cinderella story in which the beautiful heroine is   treated as a servant by her ugly stepsisters but eventually wins the love of a handsome and rich prince. bronte, however,   writes an inverted version of the story in which the plain young woman who is favoured above the conventionally beautiful and loved by a rugged version of the prince.

i'm unsure whether this sentence is active or passive voice.

    i want to be there when the final match is played at wimbledon.

when we marked it, the teacher said that it was passive voice, but isn't the subject ("i") doing the action, which makes it active? can someone explain?

    it's not the matrix clause that is passive, but just the subordinate clause functioning as complement of "when", i.e. the final match is played at wimbledon. it's a 'short passive' in that there is no internalised complement (by phrase). the subject of the subordinate passive clause is "the final match".
